NYSSMA sponsors approximately 145 solo & small ensemble and major ensemble festivals in New York State each spring. Last year, 43 All-State audition sites were scheduled in schools throughout the state. These zones represent geographic areas within the state and also take into account the student populations within these zones. New York State is divided into 15 regional zones by NYSSMA. Although there is no particular style or color of dress required for NYSSMA, most teachers would agree that NYSSMA is a special occasion and should be treated as a performance. Participants may also elect to receive a "festival" rating in which written comments are given but no score. Level I-IV solos are judged on a 28 point scale and level V-VI solos are judged on a 100 point scale. Levels 1-4 are graded out of 28, and levels 5 and 6 are graded out of 100.Įach NYSSMA solo is preassigned a difficulty level from I (easiest) to VI (most difficult). NYSSMA levels are a way of telling where you are as an instrumentalist or vocalist.
