If you are a music teacher and intend to send your students to NYSSMA festivals, please strongly consider purchasing a NYSSMA Manual. The purpose of the NYSSMA Manual is for music teachers to use it as a guide in the preparation of their students for NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals. The Manual also includes all of the Rules and Regulations as well as scale and sight-reading requirements for all NYSSMA-sanctioned evaluation festivals. If you are also planning to audition for an All-State ensemble, you must play a Level 6 piece, along with all other requirements for the audition. NYSSMA Evaluation Festival solos are split into six levels of difficulty, with the 6th level being the most difficult (see our Grading page for a rough guide to what the levels mean).

NYSSMA sponsors approximately 145 solo & small ensemble and major ensemble festivals in New York State each spring. Last year, 43 All-State audition sites were scheduled in schools throughout the state. These zones represent geographic areas within the state and also take into account the student populations within these zones. New York State is divided into 15 regional zones by NYSSMA. Students should wear clothing that is neat, clean and reflects a serious attitude.īeside above, what is Area All State Nyssma? Likewise, what should I wear to the Nyssma? Although there is no particular style or color of dress required for NYSSMA, most teachers would agree that NYSSMA is a special occasion and should be treated as a performance. Participants may also elect to receive a "festival" rating in which written comments are given but no score. Level I-IV solos are judged on a 28 point scale and level V-VI solos are judged on a 100 point scale. Levels 1-4 are graded out of 28, and levels 5 and 6 are graded out of 100.Įach NYSSMA solo is preassigned a difficulty level from I (easiest) to VI (most difficult). NYSSMA levels are a way of telling where you are as an instrumentalist or vocalist.
